Public Service Commission endorses yesterday's launch of
Anti-Corruption Hotline for the Mpumalanga Public Service

The Public Service Commission (PSC) is in full support of
and welcomes the establishment of a toll-free number by the
Mpumalanga Provincial Administration for the reporting of
acts of corruption by public servants in the province.
This initiative, which was launched yesterday, is the result
of ongoing consultations and interactions between the
Mpumalanga Administration and resident Public Service
Commissioner David Mashego. Such support of the Mpumalanga
hotline is also based on the PSC's constitutional mandate to
promote a professional work ethic in the public service.
The setting up of the Mpumalanga anti-corruption hotline is
a direct outcome of the resolutions passed by the Public
Sector Anti-Corruption Conference in November 1998 and the
National Anti-Corruption Summit of April 1999. Both events
served as launch-pads of a major campaign to fight
corruption under the auspices of the National
Anti-Corruption Initiative (NACI). The Summit committed all
sectors of society to abide by and implement the resolutions
passed and to fight any form of corruption anywhere in the
country, including government.
The PSC was instrumental in the planning and organising of
the two events, and in June 1999 Cabinet appointed the PSC
to coordinate the implementation of the anti-corruption
resolutions.
Other provincial administrations have also set up their own
toll-free numbers (listed below). The Public Service
Commission's involvement in such initiatives is meant to
send a clear message that government will not tolerate
corruption and will deal with it accordingly wherever it
occurs. The PSC therefore urges all members of the public to
play an active role in the Mpumalanga provincial campaign
against corruption by using the toll-free number provided by
the Administration, which is 0800 004 993.
