Public Service Commission Conducts Anti-Corruption
Workshop in Northern Province
10 April 2000
On Tuesday April 11 2000, the Public Service Commission (PSC)
will conduct the third in a series of its Anti-Corruption
Workshops, which it launched last month, at the Far North
Oasis Motel in Pietersburg, Northern Province.
Commissioners and senior officials from the Public Service
Commission, the Northern Province Premier, who will deliver
the keynote address, and Director-General will form part of
key participants. The Director-General will provide an
overview of the state of corruption in the province and the
administration's corrective programme of action.
Representatives of a para-statal, the banking, research and
academic and institutions are also expected to make inputs
at the cross-sectoral workshop. The PSC Chairperson and
other Commissioners will lead proceedings of the workshop.
The purpose of the workshop is to-
- obtain a commitment from all stakeholders in the
province to deal with corruption;
- create a common understanding of corruption in all
its facets;
- develop a clearly articulated provincial strategy to
fight corruption;
- recommend legislative measures to give muscle to
anti-corruption structures;
- send a clear message that corruption will not be
tolerated by government or any other role-players; and
- encourage the usage of the Northern Province
corruption reporting centre and its toll-free 'Blow the
Whistle on Corruption' hotline, number: 0800 00 2393.
The province-based workshops are part of the PSC
programme to facilitate the fight against corruption as well
as to promote implementation of the National Integrity
Strategy that was charted out by different roleplayers
during the National Anti-Corruption Summit of 1999. The
various sectors committed themselves then to continuously
promote and actively engage in the eradication of corruption
wherever it occurs, and to establish mechanisms for
combating acts of fraud, corruption and other malpractices.
In line with the Summit resolutions, participants of the
Anti-Corruption Workshops are drawn from various sectors of
society, including senior public servants, representatives
of the private and public sectors, religious, labour and
professional bodies, civil society, the media and others.
All roleplayers recognise that corruption adversely affects
all sectors of society, that it impacts most directly on the
poor, corrodes the national culture and ethos of democracy,
and depletes the resources that are needed to ensure
economic prosperity, equality and a better life for all
citizens. They are all agreed, therefore, on assisting in
nurturing a culture of zero tolerance to corruption.
Subsequent to its involvement in the planning of the Summit,
Cabinet mandated the PSC to co-ordinate the implementation
of the resolutions. Through these Anti-Corruption Workshops
the Public Service Commission continues to carry out one of
its Constitutional mandates, that is, to promote high
standards of professional ethics in the public service. It
also seeks to promote transparency, clean governance and
efficient service delivery for the benefit of all members of
the South African society.
