Public Service Commission Conducts Anti-Corruption Workshop in North-west Province

1 May 2000

The Public Service Commission (PSC) is to conduct the fourth in a series of Anti-Corruption Workshops at the Mmabatho Tusk Hotel in Mmabatho, North-west Province on Wednesday May 3 2000. The road show was launched in March following a series of workshops on the Code of Conduct for Public Servants and the current workshops, which were planned for all provinces, have now been conducted in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Province.

The province-based workshops are part of the PSC programme to facilitate the fight against corruption in the public service, in accordance with the 1999 National Anti-Corruption Summit resolutions that spelled out a co-ordinated national anti-corruption strategy involving different role-players in the country.

The North-west Province Premier will be the keynote speaker. Other participants include Mr Johnny de Lange (MP), the national and NW-resident commissioners from the Public Service Commission and senior officials from the Office of the PSC. In line with the Summit resolutions, participants of the Anti-Corruption Workshops are drawn from various sectors of society, including senior provincial public servants, representatives of the private and public sectors, religious, labour and professional bodies, civil society and others.

The aims of the workshops are to: -

  • ensure implementation of the summit resolutions within provincial administrations;
  • promote the establishment of cross-sectoral forums and co-ordinate anti-corruption activities of all provincial stakeholders;
  • recommend legislative measures to give muscle to anti-corruption structures; and
  • encourage usage of provincial hotlines to blow the whistle on defaulting civil servants.

Some of the main issues for discussion at the workshop include:

  • Progress on implementation of resolutions of the National Anti-Corruption Summit;
  • Regulatory framework of the public service;
  • Monitoring of corruption and unethical behaviour;
  • Risk Management; and
  • The Protected Disclosure Bill

Subsequent to its involvement in the planning of the Summit, the PSC was mandated by Cabinet to co-ordinate, manage and monitor progress in the implementation of the national anti-corruption strategy the country. Through these Anti-Corruption Workshops, the Public Service Commission continues to carry out its constitutional mandate of promoting high standards of professional ethics in the public service, transparency, clean governance and efficient service delivery.
