The Public Service Commission in the Eastern Cape and South African Human Rights Commission to Conduct Inspection at Zimnono Informal Settlement in Amalinda, East London
17 May 2024
The Public Service Commission (PSC) in the Eastern Cape together with the South African Human Rights Commission will conduct a joint inspection at Zimnono
Informal Settlement in Amalinda, East London on Monday, 20 May 2024. The inspection follows a video that was circulating on social media regarding people
living in the forest not far from Frere Hospital, Amalinda, East London. The PSC has noted with concern that most children living at Zimnono Informal
Settlement are not documented and were born in that forest and their parents are South Africans that are not documented. Most of these people do not qualify
for government services as they are undocumented. In addition, there is no electricity or running water in this area; those that have electricity connect by
illegal means. Furthermore, there have been incidents where people died due to these illegal connections.
It is on this basis that the PSC in the Eastern Cape together with the South African Human Rights Commission will conduct the inspection at Zimnono Informal
Settlement. Other stakeholders who will join in the inspection include a Councillor from the Buffalo City Metro and officials from the Provincial Department
of Home Affairs and Social Department.
The inspection will be preceded by a briefing session at the offices of the Human Rights Commission at Chiselhurst, East London, and thereafter proceed to
Zimnono Informal Settlement.
The members of the media are invited to join the inspection as follows:
